The CS1000 is always a “Large Switch”,
in other words it always expects TN’s
(Terminal Number – internal address) to
be in the form of Loop, Shelf, Card, Unit.
The internal connections of the system
(ELAN – Embedded LAN) between
different components such as the Call
Server, Media Gateways and Signalling
Servers is established using IP and
Ethernet only. In this way a CS1000 can
be deployed in a distributed fashion
across a network.
Media Gateway – Houses the Cards for
the system, essentially the TDM
resources. Controlled by the Media
Gateway Controller. It also contains the
Media Cards/DSP boards which allow
the conversion between the two
environments. A media Card channel is
required for every IP to TDM call in
progress.
Signalling Server – acts as the
intermediary between the Call server
and the IP sets. In addition it provides
the signalling required to set up Virtual
Trunk Calls.
